GRADING POLICY: Each midterm is worth 15% and the final is worth 50% of the total grade. The laboratory is worth 15%. An essay on the entire course focusing on conceptual aspects (no equations) is worth 5%. You are encouraged strongly to work together on problems, and to make use of tutoring programs, TA center, etc. On exams, all work is to be independent. The class average or median will be graded as a B/B-. No letter grades will be assigned to midterms.

INCOMPLETES: In accordance with University and departmental policy, the grade of "Incomplete" (I) will be assigned only if all of the following conditions are met:
a) There is a good reason beyond the student's control for not having completed the coursework on time (a heavy workload is not considered sufficient reason).
b) Early prior consent of the instructor has been obtained by the student.
c) The completed portion of the work is sufficient in quality and quantity to merit a grade of "C" or better for the period up to the time of the circumstance that justifies the Incomplete.
d) A written plan to complete the coursework must be signed by the student and the instructor and filed in the Physics Undergraduate Office. Students who cannot complete the work of the course and who do not meet these qualifications for the grade of Incomplete should seriously consider dropping the course.

TIPS:

MAKE-UP EXAM POLICY

Any request for a make-up exam received from a student should be immediately referred to the Department of Humanities and Sciences.  The department will then make the determination as to whether the request has merit.  The department will authorize make-up exams only under extraordinary and emergent situations.  Examples of such situations may include:

(1)   Death in the immediate family
(2)   Personal illness or injury, which can be documented
(3)   Car accident on way to the exam
(4)   Conflict of the exam date with a religious holiday

A student’s claim that he or she woke up the morning of the scheduled exam and did not feel well or that they were having a stomach ache or a cold will not constitute a legitimate emergent situation.  In addition, the idea of arranging, in advance, for a student to take a make-up exam because of a personal scheduling conflict will not be entertained.

Any requests received from students to schedule a make-up exam should be immediately referred to the Department.  Students will be instructed to submit a formal request in writing including verifiable documentation supporting their emergent situation (i.e. doctor’s note, police report, etc.).   These written requests will be reviewed by the Program Director and a decision made about whether to grant the make-up exam.  In the event that the Program Director approves a make-up exam, you will be consulted to decide which of the following options you prefer:

a.      Allow the student to take the same exam while being proctored in the Department of Humanities and Sciences office
b.      Create a new exam for the student if you are concerned about test integrity and being proctored in the Department of Humanities and Sciences office
c.       Base student’s final grade on all other assignments and assessments for the course without requiring the student to take the make-up exam
d.      If appropriate, provide the student with an another type of assessment option (i.e. writing a paper) in lieu of completing the missed exam

Students are requested that all make-up exams be taken within one week of the scheduled exam.
